You do not need to download teleprompter software for a laptop. Inream Teleprompter runs in the browser on Windows, Mac and Chromebook: paste your script, and it scrolls in short lines at the top of the screen, right under the webcam, while the same tab records you. It waits when you pause, and recording is free and unlimited.

Software or a browser tab?
Teleprompter software for a computer comes in two kinds. Desktop programs are installed per operating system: PromptSmart Studio for Windows and macOS, Teleprompter.com’s and Teleprompter Pro’s Mac apps. Browser teleprompters open as a web page and use the webcam and microphone the browser already has, so the same page works on a Windows PC, a MacBook and a Chromebook.
A desktop program is the better pick for a studio: a second screen under a beam-splitter glass, a foot pedal, a crew member running the scroll. For recording yourself on the laptop you already have, a browser tab does the job with nothing to install, update or license per machine.
How to record on a laptop, step by step
- Open teleprompter.inream.com in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox and allow the camera and microphone.
- Paste your script, or have AI write one from a topic. It is reflowed into lines of three to five words, so your eyes barely move.
- Choose 16:9 for YouTube, lessons and presentations, or 9:16 and 1:1 for social posts.
- Pick how the text moves: Auto-pause waits when you stop talking, Linear runs at a fixed 60-200 words per minute, Adaptive learns your pace.
- Press record. A 3-2-1 countdown starts the take; if you lose your place, one click steps the script back a line while the take keeps recording.
- Trim the start and the end, check the subtitles made from your script, and download the video with its .srt file.
Set the laptop up so you look at the lens
- Raise the laptop on books or a stand until the webcam is level with your eyes. A camera below your eyeline looks up your nose; above it, you look down at the viewer.
- Keep the script at the top of the screen, as close to the webcam as it goes. The further the text is from the lens, the more your eyes visibly drop.
- Sit a little further back than you would to type. From further away, the angle between the lens and the text gets smaller, and so does the eye movement.
- Make the text larger rather than smaller: big type lets you sit back and still read it.
- Put the main light behind the laptop, facing you, not behind you.

A laptop is where scripts get written; a phone usually has the better camera. Inream Teleprompter moves the script from the laptop to the phone with a QR code: the text travels inside the link, not through a server, and the phone records with the script under its front camera.

CapCut’s teleprompter is in its mobile app only, not on CapCut Desktop or Web.
On a Zoom, Teams or Meet call
Inream Teleprompter records its own video; it does not sit on top of a live call. For a call, put the script in a window directly under the webcam, or use a prompter built to float over calls, such as Speakflow’s desktop Overlay for Zoom, Meet and Teams on its paid plan. For a recorded message — an intro, an update, a course lesson — record it here and send the file or upload it.
